2.- Organic causes. Although age is an unavoidable factor in the development of ED, it affects more than 80% of men over 80 years of age, the most frequent association for developing ED is cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, obesity, hypertension, diabetes (the most frequent endocrine cause associated with ED, multiplying the risk by 3 with respect to the general population), dyslipidemia and arterial vascular disorders. Certain neurological diseases (Parkinson’s disease, cerebrovascular accidents, multiple sclerosis) or hormonal problems (thyroid, testosterone deficiency, elevated Prolactin, etc.) can also cause erection problems.
3.- Pharmacological cause. Certain substances such as antihypertensive drugs, drugs for the treatment of the prostate and psychotropic drugs together with drug use (abuse of alcohol, heroin, cocaine and cannabis) increase the risk of having erection problems.
However, in most cases of ED there is usually a combination of factors from the different groups, especially the organic cause.
